Why do you need Work from Home Essentials?
“An artist is as good as his tools”
The saying is true for all working professionals.
Amidst the Coronavirus pandemic, companies have shifted to the Work From Home model of work to ensure the safety of employees and their families.
The Work from Home model enabled companies to run even during the lockdown when the entire nation was asked to stay indoors. And once the country started opening up after Unlock 1.0, most companies decided to continue to let their employees work from home for a bit longer while other companies adopted WFH as a permanent mode of work.
“Change is the only constant.”
Companies are definitely taking this seriously as more and more companies are realizing the benefits of WFH in this new normal.
Amongst the corporate giants, Twitter announced that the choice between work from home and visiting office would be left to the employee.
Within a short span of 10 days after this announcement, other companies like Facebook and Shopify joined the bandwagon.
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said, “I think that it’s possible that over the next five to 10 years, maybe closer to 10 than five, but somewhere in that range, I think we could get to about half of the company working remotely permanently.” Facebook has about 48,000 employees worldwide.
“COVID is challenging us all to work together in new ways. We choose to jump in the driver’s seat, instead of being passengers to the changes ahead,” Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke wrote on Twitter announcing his company’s decision to embrace remote working.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s statement at the company’s recent Build developer conference signalled a similar change. “Every organisation will increasingly need the ability at a moment’s notice to remote everything from manufacturing to sales, to customer support,” Nadella said. For now, Microsoft employees can work from home until October.
With this growing trend of companies shifting to the Work from home model of work, it’s time you created your own personal workspace in your home.
Hold on! This sounds easier than it is.

The importance of a Laptop in your work from home setup cannot be stressed upon enough. They are a must-have in the list of things you need to work from home.
Laptops, unlike desktops, offer greater flexibility. They can be used anywhere inside your home and they let you change your working position more than once a day. What’s best is that laptops can be used even while travelling.
When buying a laptop, it is important to keep in mind the nature and quantity of your work.
Laptops come with a wide range of specs that include RAM and storage space. Choosing a Laptop with the latest Processor also proves to be beneficial in the long run.
If you’re someone who likes to work on the go, ultraportable laptops are what you need.
They are incredibly lightweight, while still being able to perform heavy tasks.
A laptop is a long-term investment. So, it goes without saying that it is advisable to buy one that adequately meets the needs of your day-to-day office work.
Work from home gives you the flexibility of being able to work from anywhere inside your home premises.
While this may look like a huge benefit, it is not.
Working for long hours on the bed or sofa in improper postures can spell doom for your back. You don’t want back problems anytime soon, do you?
Slouching can lead to a number of problems such as tension and pain in your neck, upper back, lower back, and shoulders.
A desk chair is a healthy investment that ensures you don’t develop back problems while working from home.
However, most office chairs do not offer the necessary support to help your body maintain the correct posture for hours at a time.
This is where ergonomic chairs come in.
Ergonomic chairs are designed to be larger and more elaborate than regular desk chairs and for good reason too! They offer comfort and support by addressing known areas of weakness and pain in the human body.
However, all ergonomic chairs are not the same as they are built for different people with different needs.
So, how do you choose one that’s perfect for you?
It should offer lumbar support and the shape of the support should be in relation to the curvature of your lower back.
The height of the chair and the armrests should be adjustable in a way such that your feet should be flat on the floor and your arms should rest at a ninety-degree angle.
The chairs should roll or have special wheels. This is an important factor because it prevents strains when moving around and reaching for things.
The chair should have a swivel base which helps reduce strain. A swivel is a coupling between two parts enabling one to revolve without turning the other.
An ergonomic chair might look like an unnecessary expense, but in the long run, it is an important addition to the list of work from home essentials. One that helps save hospital bills in the future!
The centre of any workspace is the Desk. Which is why it makes more a necessary part of a work from home essentials list.
A Desk that is well-tailored for you are the centre of any efficient work from home setup.
The choice of desk that you make is important because it houses all your office equipment throughout your work hours. Thus, choosing a desk that can adequately contain all of your office equipment as well as provide an ambience that enhances the quality of your work is vital.
Nowadays, there are desks that let you stand while you’re working. This may come as a surprise to you as standing while working is relatively unheard of.
However, there is a lot of information that points to the health risks of sitting idle at one place for too long. This information always indicated how standing is a much healthier alternative.
The benefits of standing are:
It reduces the risk of weight gain that leads to obesity
It lower blood sugar levels
It lowers your risk of heart disease, and other diseases linked to inactivity
It reduces back pain that is caused by sitting for long periods
The benefits of standing are not restricted to the above points only.
However, while standing has its benefits, standing all day, too, will cause problems. Experts say, ideally, movement is what you need to aim for. You should look to change your work position, both seated and standing, throughout the day.
Some adjustable standing desks require you to manually turn a handle to lower or raise the desk, and more expensive models can be moved at the touch of a button.
An adjustable standing desk gives you the freedom to switch between seated and standing as soon as you start to feel aches, pain, or fatigue. As such, it is an excellent investment for anyone who spends most of their day working from home.
Yes. In case you were wondering why you didn’t come across this one yet, here we are.
In all probability, you do have an Internet Service at your home. However, with your office work now shifting into your home, it’s time to upgrade to ‘high-speed’ internet.
High-speed Internet easily ranks in the top three of most important work from home essentials.
Most people who are new to the concept of work from home neglect the necessity of high-speed internet.
Most offices have a high-speed Internet connection to facilitate the execution of tasks in a smooth manner. You are used to completing your day-to-day office tasks in such an environment.
Working with a mediocre Internet connection will fail to provide the best ambience necessary for work. Frustration and continuous interruption at work is what will result.
The reason why you need to upgrade your Internet speed while working from home is that your office tasks need a much higher speed than your everyday browsing and shopping online.
Video conferencing is an integral part of the work from a home model and a high-speed Internet connection is an absolute necessity for this.
If you design or code for a client, you’re going to have to send large files back and forth: files much bigger than an email can handle.
All of these tasks need fast internet. And the last thing you want is your video call dropping or your file download taking hours when it should take minutes.
It’s worth looking at the options your provider can give you, and upgrading to a faster package. This will save you time and a lot of frustration further down the line when you can continue to operate as efficiently as you can in the office.
One of the major reasons why Work from home wasn’t a regular thing was due to the sub-optimal ambience for work.
Assuming that more than 90% of office goers live with their family, it can be safely said that distractions are the unwanted gift that comes with the many benefits of working from home.
Eliminating distractions is going to be a priority when working from home. It’s very easy to turn the TV on, or do housework, all the while procrastinating instead of doing actual work.
How do you minimize this distraction?
Simple. Just add Noise-cancelling headphones to your list of work from home essentials.
Noise-cancelling headphones help you get into the work zone. Whether it’s to play your favourite work music or just to create a sense of silence and calm, the ‘noise-cancelling’ features of these headphones make them more than worth the investment.
While working from home, it is an irritating hassle when you have to go out to buy office stationery.

Adding office stationery to your list of work from essentials is only logical.
Stationery items you can often buy in bulk at a very low price, so it’s worth stocking up so that you have yourself covered for weeks, months, or even years.
